As a dental hygienist with over a decade of experience, I’ve noticed that many people focus solely on cavities during their dental visits. While this is important, there are other crucial aspects of oral health that often go overlooked.
The Importance of Gum and Bone Health
Your gums and bone need to be healthy too for your teeth to stay in your mouth. Yes, you can lose your teeth from gum disease and bone loss! It’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure your entire mouth is healthy.
Key Questions to Ask Your Hygienist
Are my gums bleeding? If so, where?
Pay special attention to these areas at home. Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease, and addressing these areas can help prevent further issues.
What are my periodontal (perio) measurements?
Do I have deep pockets? Address these areas every 6 months and monitor if the numbers are staying the same or increasing. Deep pockets can indicate gum disease and need to be managed carefully.
Is my current oral hygiene routine effective?
If not, consider changing your toothbrush or toothbrush head. Be more intentional with your brushing and flossing. Add adjuncts like mouth rinse to help. An effective oral hygiene routine is crucial for maintaining healthy gums and teeth.
Take Action
If things don’t improve after 6 months, talk to your provider about other options. You might need a deep cleaning to help shrink your pockets. Regular check-ups and professional cleanings are essential for maintaining good oral health.
Conclusion
Maintaining good oral hygiene is not just about avoiding cavities. It’s about ensuring your entire mouth is healthy. By asking the right questions and being proactive about your oral health, you can achieve a healthier smile.
