I cannot recount the number of patients that have sat in my dental chair and expressed concerns about bleeding gums. For some, this has been an ongoing issue since their teenage years, and now they are grown men with families. Some have wrestled with this condition for so long it has become “normal.” But is it really “normal,” though?

There are many reasons why your gums might bleed:

  • Gingivitis: This is the early stage of gum disease and is often caused by plaque buildup on the gumline.

  • Gum Disease: More advanced stages of gum disease can lead to significant gum bleeding and other serious oral health issues.

  • Iron Deficiency: Low iron levels can affect your oral health, leading to symptoms like bleeding gums.

  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make gums more sensitive and prone to bleeding.

  • Menstrual Cycle: Some women experience bleeding gums during their menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations.

  • Diabetes: High blood sugar levels can affect your gums, making them more susceptible to infection and bleeding.

  • Medication: Blood thinners and other medications can increase the likelihood of gum bleeding.

  • Trauma: Physical injury to the gums can cause bleeding.

Regardless of the reasons why your gums might be bleeding, proper oral hygiene at home can make it better. Here are some tips to help you maintain healthy gums:

  • Brush Every Surface of Your Teeth: Brush at least twice a day to remove plaque and prevent its buildup.

  • Floss Between Your Teeth: Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque from areas that your toothbrush can't reach.

  • Brush Your Tongue: Brushing your tongue helps remove bacteria and freshens your breath.

By following these steps, you can begin to remove plaque, prevent more from accumulating, reduce inflammation, and subsequently bleeding.
